How many pallets fit in a 53 ft trailer?
A 53 ft dry van takes 30 standard 48×40 pallets turned with the 48 in side across, or 26 loaded straight. The often-quoted 28 is a valid mixed layout but not the maximum. A 48 ft van takes 28 turned, and the 53 ft van takes 65 of the 48×20 half pallet, filling 99.3% of the floor.

For North American freight the question usually means 48×40 pallets in a 53 ft dry van, and the honest answer is "26 or 30, depending on which way you turn them". The van's inside floor, taken at the smallest published size, is 15,977 mm long and 2,540 mm wide (629 by 100 in).
Straight or turned
Loaded straight, with the 48 in side along the trailer, each row of two uses 1,219 mm of length and 13 rows fit: 26 pallets. Turned, the 48 in sides go across, two of them use 2,438 of the 2,540 mm width, and each row needs only 1,016 mm of length. Fifteen rows fit, which gives 30, with 737 mm left at the doors and 102 mm across. Thirty is also the count with 20 mm of play, so the turned layout is not a paper-only answer.

Where 28 comes from
Hale Trailer's guide gives 26 for straight loading, which our figure reproduces, and adds that "some sources say 28 pallets" by alternating orientation. Twenty-eight is a real layout: four straight rows and ten turned rows use 15,036 mm. It is simply not the best one. Turning every row gives 30, and you can keep up to three rows straight and still reach it, since each straight row costs only 203 mm more length than a turned one.
The 48 ft van
The 48 ft van is 14,453 mm long inside. Straight loading gives 22 and turned loading 28. Hale quotes 24 as 12 rows of two, but twelve 48 in rows need 14,628 mm, more than the 14,453 mm inside length the same guide publishes, so that figure cannot be reproduced. Turned, the margin is thin: with 20 mm of play the count drops to 26.

The half-size 48×20 pallet is the best match for the van of any pallet in the data. Five of them across use 2,540 mm, exactly the planning width, and 13 rows give 65 pallets on 99.3% of the floor. Because there is no width to spare, play costs it five positions.
EUR1 pallets go three across with their 800 mm sides, 140 mm spare, in 13 rows: 39 in the 53 ft van and 36 in the 48 ft van. That makes a US van a good home for European pallets, a point the European vs North American trailers guide follows up.
A second layer
With 2,794 mm of inside height the 53 ft van takes two layers of 1.2 m units, 60 pallets of 48×40 in all, and two layers fit while each unit stays at or under 1,397 mm. Whether a load can carry another on top is up to the goods and the packaging.
